Third bike in a Honey series for a special Hup United project:  The limited edition Winter Time training bike.  We’re employing the cross bike philosophy to this all weather bike.

Project name:  Winterando

The other two bikes in the Hup Limited Edition project are:

Project Directives:

  • Fender-able bike – fast without them; a clean ride with them
  • Easily fits 33c tires – even with fenders
  • Stable for wet, snowy, or even icy conditions
  • A couple kit options – 1) super durable plus low maintenance; 2) super light.  First up is durable.

A lot more details to come.  I think this is going to be the bike of the winter!

Project timeline in reverse:

January 11  |  This is a cool bike.  A mix of rando, gravel, harsh weather.  A bit of everything but it will excel as a road bike, too.  I think it will fit 33c tires – I’m a fan of Jack Browns; I know, a bit odd for winter.  I’ve got some other options in the hopper, too.  That’s the plan anyway.  Thought about making it compatible with 650b wheels, too.  But I’ve decided that this isn’t a disc bike.  It’s a medium reach caliper brake bike.  Fender-able, big tires, and more.  A performance bike that can handle any road that a car once went down.  And a lot of single track, too.

January 9, 2013  |   Have begun in earnest on the limited edition Winter Time bike – I’m calling it the Winterando[tm].  This is a take on the Honey Weather bike.  This new Winter Time is coming together in a really interesting way.  Every bike seems to becoming a niche of one.

January 8, 2013  |  Some of the inspiration for this bike is the Nella Neve project that I just completed.  I want to create a similar bike in the $3,000 range.  Honey seems like the right platform for this bike.

Aidan Keats Kesner wrote about the Ride Studio Cafe in his Tumblr today.  He’s training to be a professional cyclist and has been riding with the Studio Saturday group.  Here are his thoughts about RSC:

I’ve done the ride many times in the past, and in the previous weeks, I’ve spent a bunch of time riding over with those guys and really enjoyed the company in the cold weather.

“To finish up, I’d like to thank all the guys at RSC, the past month of riding has been much more enjoyable with all their support. From hosting many different options for rides throughout the weeks, to a heater and some hot water after some riding in 38 degree rain, I’m very thankful. They’ve got some great rides, and some really great food and coffee for post ride. Definitely check them out, they are right in Lexington Center.”

Chainstays – charting the path to infinite futures

Friday location:  Seven  ||  7:20 am – 9:10 pm

  • Love Riding:  Seven Cycles just received an order for a coaster brake bike.  That’s cool.  I haven’t ridden a coaster brake in too many years.  Some day I’ll have a kickback two-speed bike again.
  • Product Loop:  Worked a bit today on chainstay categorization within the world of Seven.  There are about 20 variables on any stay design.  And each variable interacts in multiple ways.  I look forward to figuring out the matrix.  We’re getting there.  Right now each design feels like a re-creation of the wheel.  No pun.
  • Business Development:  Making good progress on some food experiments at Ride Studio Cafe.  We’re actually going to be offering something other than usual.  But, of course we’re making it really complicated to make something really simple.  The Studio Cafe menu will soon undergo a major update.  I can’t wait.
  • Product Design:  Updating the Nella Neve with SRAM parts, studded tires, and drop bars.  Hoping to be back on the bike by next weekend.

New overlay on old – chainstays at Seven Cycles

Thursday location:  Seven  ||  7:50 am – 7:45 pm

  • Business Development:  More work on the five year plan for Seven.  Bit by bit.  One of the ways we approach the work is by breaking it into territories:  domestic, Europe, Pacific Rim, and a couple other areas.  A five year plan for each area is time consuming.  And always wrong.
  • Business Development:  I was invited today to help with an eBike – F.B. – project that’s just getting started.  This is the third eBike project I’ve been asked to work on in the past few months.  The Shape of Things to Come.  I’m not sure I’m going to work on this project yet.  It is pretty interesting though.
  • Product Design:  Slowly working on organizing Seven Cycles’ chainstay design portfolio.  It only seems to expand; never fewer.  Stef is helping switch everything over to SolidWorks.
  • Product Development:  Fast and Furious on the Honey Bike front.  Some really interesting work.  Just about completed a new Race Series Honey that’ll be super light and super stiff.  For steel.

Honey is taking what we’ve done with the the Hup Limited Edition Cyclocross Honey and applying it to a limited edition Mountain Trail bike.

Wednesday location:  7:20 am – 5:30 pm

  • Business Development:  Crawling along on year end work for Seven Cycles.  And trying to finalize all the details for the 2013 season.  It sort of feels like 2013 is almost over already.
  • Business development:  Today marks the day of some big improvements at Ride Studio Cafe.  Very exciting for the team at RSC.  Details to follow soon.  I simply want to mark the day today.  A lot of work to do before the season hits.  It feels like it’s already here.  We wrapped up the year really strong; so much better than we could have hoped.  It’ll be difficult to keep it reigned in for 2013.  A great problem.
  • Product Development:  Some great work happening with Honey Bike design.  Lots of tubeset work going on.  Some small detail changes, too.  And new kit options.  Getting some race bike designs in the mix.  Feedback soon.

Honey has had a Race Day bike line for about a year now.  However, I had an epiphany last week.  The Honey Race bike is a classics race bike – meaning designed for 6-hour races where a tricky balance of performance, stiffness, comfort, durability, and handling require nearly equal shares.  The epiphany was that Honey has been missing out on some of the funnest kind of racing:  criteriums, circuit races, and the majority of US road races.  These races love bike stiffness, durability, tight handling, and light weight.  All day comfort is not relevant.

What's in a name - One is in Honey

Project Name:  Final 200 Meters.  That is what this bike is all about – the race’s final 200 meters, and of course, getting you to that point, fast.  The mission of this purebred race bike is to get you through the final meters of the sprint – faster and more surefootedly than anyone else.  This is a no apology race only bike.

The directives for this project include some conflicting goals – that’s my kind of project:

  • Lighter than carbon bikes at the same price-point.  We’re talking complete bike, obviously not the frame alone.
  • Drivetrain stiffness that exceeds the stiffest carbon bikes
  • Handling optimized for tight, shoulder-to-shoulder criterium racing
  • Vertical compliance equal to that of Honey’s Day Ride bike
  • SRAM Rival bike price of $3,500 – with real wheels that are performance oriented.  No $150 set of wheels on these Honeys.

Here are a few photos of the first two prototypes being built.

In order to meet the weight and stiffness targets – definitely an impossible challenge – we started with a brand new tubeset.  Most of the tubing we’re butting and modifying ourselves.  Of course, for each Honey frame size we choose an appropriate tubeset – every size has it’s own set.  Here are some of the tube details for a 55 cm top tube 200 Meters:

  • 1.00″ chainstay diameter.  We’re designing these from scratch.  No one is making a 1-even stay like we’re looking for.  The diameter, for a given wall thickness, provides a chainstay that’s about 250% stiffer – in torsion and bending – than a standard steel road chainstay.  We’re also butting this tube so it’ll end up at about the same weight as a classic tapered stay but it’ll still be about 200% stiffer; I think that’ll be about enough.  There are couple bikes in the world that rock the 1-even.  The two that come to mind are Pegoretti’s Big Leg Emma and Speedvagon‘s track bikes – but not their road bikes.  Our approach to dropout mating is a bit different, and deals with heal clearance issues.
  • 1.5″ down tube.  The trick here is to save weight; increasing from a 1.25″ to a 1.5″ tube – while maintaining the same wall thickness – adds about 20% more weight.  So, we’re thinning out the butted sections a bit.  And we’ll end up with a tube that’s about 200% stiffer than a contemporary steel road down tube.  We’re working with an overly thin section and very short butts.  We’re doing some mod-work on the down tube, too.  Very much not stock or standard.
  • 44 mm head tube diameter.  We’re designing a special Honey tube for this.  We haven’t found the right tapered fork mate.  Since this is likely to be the heaviest tube in the bike – if we don’t design it ourselves – we’re taking this part very seriously.  Of course, this large size, combined with the fork steerer will create a overly stiff front end; that’s where the top tube design plays an important role – as well as the fork choice.
  • 0.50″ seat stays.  Very small diameter and very thin wall.  The chainstays are all the work to transfer energy from pedals to rear tire contact patch.  The seat stays are helping maintain some vertical compliance – this actually improves bike handling, too.
  • Seat tube:  this tube is also a bit unusual.  We’re working with a 1.375″ tube; larger diameter than typical   We’re doing this to stiffen up the drivetrain to the nth degree.  We’re also expending the seat tube; this is not an integrated seat post design.  It’s a bit of a cross between integrated and classic.  We’re also incorporating a carbon sleeve to fit an oversized seat post.  Super light and very stiff.
  • Top tube:  this is about the most ‘normal’ tube in the entire frameset – aside from the bottom bracket.  For the top tube we want to ensure some vertical compliance while maintaining great front end torsional stiffness.

This bike will ride like no other steel bike.  This is a 100% Final 200 Meter Project.

We’ve got a database of carbon bike deflection information so we know the target and I believe we’re going to meet or exceed each of the design directives.

The graphics and colorways for the Final 200 Meters is a break from the classic understated Honey look.  Get ready for a memorable bike that may just get into your psyche.

Project timeline in reverse:

January 17  |  Honey race deflection tests wrapped up today.  Confirmed that these frames are VERY stiff.  Hit the target for frame stiffness.  It’s always nice when the math on paper works out in the real world.  Now for the riding of the Honeys.  For some reason we have a good queue of interested test riders.

January 14  |  Honey “Final 200 Meters” Race bike number One is finally in paint.  Photos after the fold.  Staci and Jordan are both working on it.  The new Race Scheme requires eight layers of primer-color-clear.  It’s a more complicated scheme than anything Honey has done in the past.  I think it’ll be worthwhile though.  Staci and I worked on the scheme design and colorways.  Hoping to assemble the bike on Thursday.

January 10  |  The first two production framesets are just about complete.  Agonizing over the colorways right now.  Everything else is ready to go.   The RSC Team will be riding these first designs by next weekend.  Posted a few photos.

January 7  |  Worked on final details of the tube geometries.  Frame geometries just about completed.  Twelve sizes of stock bike to fit riders from about 4′ 10″ to 6′ 9″.  Also worked on complete bike kits and pricing.  It looks like we’ll come in right on target.  More tomorrow.

January 4, 2013  |  I’ve run the numbers on stiffness, ride characteristics  and durability.  It’s a tricky balance of weight reduction without tempting the beer can effect demons.   Sourcing raw materials today.  Will start machining next week; by the end of the process we’ll end up with more metal weight on the ground than in the frame; most of the material we’re buying will turn into metal shavings.

First Macchiato of the Year

  • Time Marker:  New Year’s Day.
  • Product Development:  Getting Mary’s and Mike’s 650b bike designs completed for Seven Cycles.  Stuck on the head tube situation.  That’s okay.  I’ll figure something out.
  • Product Development:  Working on the road disc brake fork prototype for Seven Cycles.  Hoping for a rideable version in a couple weeks.  It may not ride well but it will stop.  We’re tagging this along with the cross fork project.
  • Note:  It often surprises people to hear that I review every customer bike design at Seven Cycles.  That’s many designs each day.  Sometimes they pile up a bit – as everyone at Seven knows – but I still review all of them.  Some people find that crazy.  I find it engaging; and I learn something with every customer.  Of course, Neil D. and Dan V. do all the hard work.
