Mary, Mike, and I have been talking for a while about designing 650b bikes for their 2013 season.  Mike and Mary are doing more and more multi-day mountain bike endurance events and a set of 650b bikes are perfect for this type of race.

Mike writes:

We have come to the conclusion that this could be an optimal wheel size for many reasons that split the current opinion between 29 and 26″.  I have been putting a good deal of thought into the characteristics that we would like to incorporate into these bikes […]

Seven has been building 650b bikes for a few years now – when we built our first 650b’s there was only one tire choice – so we’re excited to get our world-class racers on them.  And we’ll be incorporating some new design ideas.

We have a number of new ideas we’re putting into these frames, and a lot of iterating from their most recent 29ers.  This pair of mountain bikes will be the most technically advance that Seven’s ever built.  A long list of idea’s I’ll add here as we execute.

Project timeline in reverse:

December 31  |  Working on the final details of Mary McConneloug’s and Mike Broderick’s new 650b bikes.  New chainstay design, a few details on the tubeset, seat post integration, and some head tube work.  Going into production this week for a race in late January.  Holidays got in the way.

November 30  |   We’re expecting to have the framesets to Mary and Mike next week – Thanksgiving got in the way.  This will give them about two months of testing before Mary and Mike put the bikes through their upcoming grueling Andes race in late January.

November 17  |  Mary and Mike visited; it’s great to be able to talk face to face on details.  I have way too many emails about this project.  We’re in agreement on the design details.  Frames going into production next week!

November 6  |  Working on final details for Mary McConneloug and Mike Broderick’s 650b mountain bikes for the 2013 season.  They’re going to be riding them on the Trans Andes stage race in late January.  These bikes will be perfect for that terrain. 650b are the hot set up right now and we’ve been building them for a few years.  Dialed.

October 31  |  We’ve confirmed the overall design and Mike and Mary can’t wait to get riding the 650b wheel size.

September 12  |  I’ve worked up a draft of the overall design.  Nothing radical; iteration and refinement of their most recent frames from 2012.  Hoping to begin building the frames in Early November.

August 22  |  We’re basing the overall design on their latest 29er bikes.  We’re taking the rider position and the best prototype features of their 29ers and pulling them all together for these 650s.

August 8, 2012  |  Mary, Mike, and I have been talking for a while about designing 650b bikes for their 2013 season.  Mike and Mary are doing more and more multi-day endurance events and a set of 650b bikes are perfect for this type of race.  Today we officially started this project.
