- Product Development: Met with Michael Lin of Greenwheel today. He brought by the latest generation of the electric assist wheel design. The new changes require some adaptation of the design on which I am working. The original deadline for this project was the end of February. So, the deadline just got pushed so that we can incorporate the new wheel system and some other improvements – like the controller box that no longer is needed.
- Video Project: Met with Natalia B. and John L. today to talk about a Seven Cycles video project. Also working with Natalia on a Ride Studio Cafe video.
- Business Development: Had a meeting at Seven Cycles today where we worked on some inventory management. I love inventory because it’s so counter-intuitive I subscribe to the Toyota Production System view of inventory. It’s a complex conversation but, to me, the essence is: the more inventory you have, the less likely you are to have the inventory you want. It is true. More on this later.

Thursday location: Seven | Studio || 6:5o am – 8:40 pm
- Business Development: Had the first in a series of long-term strategy meetings with Ride Studio Cafe today. Refining the plan. Narrowing the focus. My challenge is not coming up with strategies; my challenge is deciding what not to do. So, we’ve been working on that. The way forward is clear. It’s going to be an amazing year.
- Graphic Design: Final jersey chosen for the Ride Studio Cafe’s Sicily tour. Final design begun. We still have two weeks until the trip. That’s lots of time in Rob Years.
- Clothing Design: The Seven Cycles 2013 Winter wool jersey arrived today. At least, the first few did. It’s a very different design than the maker has done before. It was a challenge but I think it was worth it. We’ve got two styles: full zip medium weight wool. And a trainer jacket that’s a slightly heavier weight, with a slightly different look.

The latest bike in the Honey Bike line: The Utility Cyclocross bike. It’s a necessary bike. Honey’s cross bike is a pure US race bike so it’s not suited to multipurpose riding. So, I decided it would make sense to ad a bike that’s cross raceable and works well for multi-hour rides, commuting, and harsh weather fun.
The primary difference e between the UtCo and the Cross bike is geometry and tubeset. This bike is more stable for longer rides. The bike can also handle tougher riding and usage.

Wednesday location: Seven | 7:55 am – 9:05 pm
- Business Development: Working with Matt O. on employee feedback sessions. It’s a full-time job to work with each person and determine the best path for each. It’s also one of the coolest parts of the job, to me. Determining the path with an employee is the second most important work in a company, I say. Matt and I don’t do it nearly often enough but every time we work on it, I feel the company move forward.
- Video: I just saw a video that Cycling Plus and Bike Radar put together about theSeven Cycles 622 SLX.
- Business Development: For some reason today I worked on organizing Seven’s 200+ R&D projects. Why does the list only grow and never recede? It’s a good situation but it can be sometimes tiring to say no to projects that look like fun.
- Business Development: The Seven Cycles Winter Session is next week – again. I thought I had everything ready to go this time. Not so likely. I’ve made some mods to a couple of the clinics that I’m leading. More later.

Tuesday location: 7:55 am – 8:40 pm
- Product Development: I’m meeting with Michael Lin later this week so I’ve been working on the eBike project some. There’s a new generation of Greenwheel that I’m trying to integrate into the prototype I’ve been developing. This project has become pretty large; I knew it was going to be a lot of work – every element of the bike is new for Seven – but the new revisions on the rear wheel mean a redesign of some of the work I’ve already done. And Skunk is going to take the demo eBike for a commute or two.
- Video: Thom Parsons posted a great video of Matt Roy’s birthday ride. Some snow, mud, and lots of smiles. Worth a viewing.
- Project: Just got invited to a cool project! Details exposed soon.
- Product Development: Working on a new Honey bike: The All Roads. Inspired by a customer request that relates to D2R2 and similar kind of riding. It’s not randonneuring; it’s not cyclocross. Ironically, it’s the kind of riding I like best: mixed terrain on and off road riding; including some singletrack – all on a bike that most people might mistake for a road bike. Anyway, I’m just about done with the first round of design work on the new All Roads.

Mo Bruno Roy planned a surprise birthday ride for her husband Matt Roy. The surprise began at Ride Studio Cafe. And Matt was surprised.

Monday location: Seven | 7:55 am – 7:30 pm + Dinner Meeting
- Words: Zac Daab of Cascade Bicycle Studio is working on a neat project that includes Seven. Secret for now. Although it’s no secret that they’re about to move. If you’re in the Seattle area, visit them!
- Projects: Met with Matt Roy and Mo Mo Bruno Roy this evening to work on a number of projects. Two of the primary, and time sensetive projects are MM Racing 2014 program and Matt’s prototype bike. Deadlines looming close.
- Words: Chip Baker wrote a bit about the Honey Bikes’ Winterando. Chip always nails it.
- Rules: The Rule of Thirds. I’ve said it many times before, when you’re working on a project with others, you’ll get one third of what you want, one third of what the other interprets you want, and one third of what the other wants. This seems to hold true even when it’s not a collaborative project. And I don’t believe in rules.
