What? A third day of riding – in a row? It must be something special: A 24-hour excursion to NYC.

First off, I’m not going to make the 500 km. I’m trying for 50% of the 500. That’d be a big enough record for me.

- Ride: Mostly a might ride. Scouted part of the Snowflake Century. Legs 4 and 6 o’clock. They need a lot of work – my legs that is.

This is one of the more unusual rides we’re putting together at the Ride Studio Cafe.
On the surface an odd design, perhaps. But, RSC had a few unusual requirements for this ride:
- We had no idea what the weather conditions might be; it is New England afterall. My original design had some dirt roads included; that turned out to be a big mistake and required a number of miles of rerouting during this week.
- We wanted to have a Festive 500 ride on which someone could conveniently roll for multiple distances. The shortest distance – one leg of the six – is about 16 miles. Two legs are about 33 miles, etc.
- RSC wanted to do something different – something we wouldn’t normally do. What a surprise. The Snowflake definitely fulfills that request.
- This is to be a ride that would only be ‘appropriate’ in a New England winter.
Enter: The Snowflake Century.
It was a lot more difficult to design than I expected.

Bicycling Magazine just published a great piece by the prolific Molly Hurford. Molly took all the photos and wrote the article. It’s a photo essay about Seven. Molly really captured the feel of Seven.
It was great to meet with Molly and talk about Seven. I was fascinated that her interests went well beyond, “What type of titanium do you use?” and, “Why don’t you tapered tubes?”

we’ve just started Seven’s second major project bike for 2014. For me, project bikes are bikes that aren’t production items – not bikes that we’re likely to offer as part our line. Project bikes test our limits and provide me space to try bad ideas and see what happens.
This latest project we started officially this week. We have four months to pull it together. This bike is more different than anything else we’ve worked on before. The constraints are significant and so are the design opportunities. The limitations are just the hours in the day. It’s a bit challenging to add another project to the long list when Seven is not quite caught up for the year. And all signs point to Seven being busier in 2014. Regardless, basic research and design is important.
I can’t share too much right now because it’s still top secret. This is Project Towards Singularity.
