Product Development: Limited Edition Hup Honey Cyclocross Bike

This is the first limited edition project for Honey Bikes!

When Honey decided it was time to build a cross bike, the bees went straight to Hup
United founder Zac Daab to see if he’d be willing to act as the project’s design advisor.  Why?  We wanted to develop a pure U. S. cross race bike; and, of course, Honey would
be hard pressed to find a group that knows more about U.S. cross racing than Hup United and Zac.

The production Cyclocross Honey is a pure contemporary American race bike—responsive, quick, and stripped down for cross racing. Handbuilt of U.S. steel; no apologies.

Enter Chip Baker and Hup New England.  When the Ride Studio Cafe connected with Chip trouble ensued.  The Studio and Chip concocted the idea of a limited edition Hup Honey – a Hupney – bike.  We took the best of the production Honey bike and combined it with some new ideas and input.  The results speak for themselves.

Here are some of the details of what makes this bike unique:

  • Limited Edition:  We’re only building 30 Hup Cross bikes. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.  Why 30?  Because Sven Nys won 30 cross races in the 2006-07 season, so we’re making one bike for each of his victories.  And, each bike will have the race name on it, in sequential order—as a “serial number”; the first bike gets, “Erpe Mere – Belgium”—the name of first race Sven won in the season; the second bike gets, “Aigle – Switzerland”—the second race name.  And so on.
  • Super-light tubeset:  We removed about 120 grams from the frame without having a negative effect on handling, performance, or durability.
  • Special paint scheme:  Primarily white, with yellow and blue accents, the Hup Edition will be a standout on any ride.  Additional details:
    • The yellow Leo Belgicus—the Belgian Lion—on the head tube
    • You can also choose the “White Kit” or “Black Kit” for saddle, housing, bar tape, and hoods.
  • Component Upgrades:
    • Wheel upgrades—two options:
      • Mavic Ksyrium SL tubuars with Dugast Typhoon tires
      • Mavic Aksium wheels with Maxxis Raze tires
    • Brake upgrade to Tektro 720s
  • Super fast lead-time:  Cross season is upon us; we guarantee 3-week lead-time!
  • Choose a frameset or complete bike. This is the first time that Honey has offered a frameset—including frame, fork, and stem all painted
  • Any Model: While Hup United is all about cross racing, all riding is good riding.  So, if you prefer a Hup road bike, all weather bike, or anything else that Honey offers, we’re happy make a Hup version.
  • Represent Hup United!

This was a great project on which to work.  I hope we do this again!  In the meantime, start racing.
